Introduction
Global stakeholders of Development have expressed their concerns about the risks that would arise if the linear economic model continues. There are three main issues as threats, what they call the three planetary crisis, namely: climate change, pollution and environmental damage, loss of biodiversity and natural resources.
It is estimated that the earth’s population in 2050 will need 3 planets to live healthy and fit for a sustainable life. Therein lies the urgency for a circular economy to be responded to immediately with strong action and commitment.
ISO Geneva, driven by several national standardization bodies in several countries (such as France, the Netherlands, Brazil, Japan and also BSN Indonesia) has conducted a study on the urgency of standardization related to circular economy practices. This encourages more perfect sustainability practices towards achieving the SDGs and Net Zero Emissions which have become a joint commitment at the same time.
Paying attention to developments in global and national resource utilization patterns, the Ministry of National Development Planning/Bappenas has also conducted a study and model of an Indonesian-style circular economy by compiling a guideline on what is called a road map towards Indonesia’s circular economy in 2025-2045.
In line with the commitment of BSN and the Ministry of Bappenas regarding the importance of circular practices being developed in all activities of life, several experts, practitioners and researchers who are members of the expert team (komteks) founded the Indonesian Circular Economy and Sustainability (ICES) institute with the intention of contributing to the journey strengthening circular economy movements and actions in Indonesia.
ICES as an institution committed to the circular economy movement will position itself neutrally and independently, and is ready to partner with anyone for reliable circular tasks/actions nationally and even globally.
The Indonesian Circular Economy Award (2024) is a strategic initiative of ICES in addition to activities such as regular studies through CEST (Circular Economy and Sustainability Talks), action research and training related to awareness and tools in circular economy aspects which will definitely develop over time.
On Wednesday, July 24 2024, with the support of BSN and Bappenas, ICES will carry out a Grand launch of ICEA 2024, welcoming a series of initial CEST dialogues and the basic 1st batch of Circular Economy Training Workshop on August 24 2024.
This activity is supported by international circular experts from several countries who are members of the ISO Circular Economy Working Group, such as the Netherlands and Sweden. Also a practitioner and circular economy expert on the National BSN Komtek team.
